The Hammer and Sickle Medal is a special insignia of distinction. It is presented to Heroes of Socialist Labour together with the USSR's highest award, the Order of Lenin, and a Diploma of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet. The title of Hero of Socialist Labour is awarded for outstanding achievements in labour to people whose innovations have considerably contributed to improving production, and to those who have helped advance the Soviet economy, its science or culture, and the might and prestige of the USSR. This decoration was established in June 1945.
