A nice League of Mercy 1898 cross in box, gilding silver, enamel, original ribbon. Very good condition, original box. The League of Mercy was founded on the initiative of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and received its Royal Charter on 30 March 1899. Its aim was to maintain voluntary hospitals in the era before state provision of health services. The Order was awarded ‘as a reward for personal services gratuitously rendered in connection with the purposes for which the League was established’ and nominations were made by the Grand President of the League (usually the then Prince of Wales) and approved by the sovereign. After the National Health Service was established in 1948 and took over the League’s hospitals, it was wound down and no awards were made after 1946
