On the photo: the pilot of the 73rd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, Junior Lieutenant Lydia Litvyak (1921—1943) on the wing of her Yak-1B after flying a sortie. During her war service, Lt. Litvyak had flown over 160 sorties, and had between 4 and 12 solo victories after engaging in 66 dogfights making her one of the world’s two only female fighter aces (along side Katya Budanova). According to certain records, Litvyak was killed during the Battle of Kursk when she went to engage a German convoy on 1 August 1943. However, the historical community can’t agree on how she exactly met her fate.
