The blockade of Leningrad is the military blockade of the city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) by German, Finnish and Spanish (Blue Division) troops with the participation of volunteers from North Africa, Europe and the Italian Navy during the Great Patriotic War. Lasted from September 8, 1941 to January 27, 1944 (the blockade ring was breached on January 18, 1943) - 872 days.

By the beginning of the blockade, the city did not have sufficient food and fuel reserves. The only way to communicate with Leningrad was Lake Ladoga, which was within reach of artillery and aviation besieging, and the combined naval flotilla of the enemy also operated on the lake. The carrying capacity of this transport artery did not match the needs of the city. As a result, the mass famine that began in Leningrad, aggravated by a particularly severe first blockade in winter, problems with heating and transport, led to hundreds of thousands of deaths among residents.

After the breakthrough of the siege of Leningrad, the enemy troops and the fleet continued until September 1944. To force the enemy to withdraw the siege of the city, in June-August 1944, Soviet troops, with the support of the ships and aircraft of the Baltic Fleet, conducted Vyborg and Svir-Petrozavodsk operations, released Vyborg on June 20, and Petrozavodsk June 28. In September 1944, the island of Hogland was liberated.

For mass heroism and courage in the defense of the Motherland in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, shown by the defenders of the besieged Leningrad, according to the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on May 8, 1965, the city received the highest degree of distinction - the Hero City title.

January 27 is the Day of Russia's military glory - Day of the complete lifting of the siege of the city of Leningrad (1944).
