A nice Order of Maria Cristina (Al Merito En Campana order), WWII period. Tombac, gilding, silvering. This award was originally instituted in 1890 as the “Order of Maria Cristina” but was better known by its common name, the “War Cross”. It was awarded to Officers of the armed forces (German and Spanish) for outstanding actions and fidelity. There were three versions that were awarded depending on the rank of the recipient: 1st Class for General ranks, 2nd Class for High Ranking Field Officers and 3rd Class for Junior Officers. This is the 3rd Class for Junior Officers with a nickel/silver star, bronze cross, wreath and devices.
