This book is about the heroic Russian army, its participation in the First World War - one of the most grandiose and tragic events of the 20th century. On its pages images of famous and unknown heroes of the Great War come to life. The capital handbook covers the period from the last prewar years to March 1917. The subject of consideration is only the land forces of Russia and only those parts that took part in the fighting (regular army). Containing extensive factual material, this book is addressed to a wide range of readers, fans of military history, specialists, collectors and reenactors. The publication is a fundamental work in two volumes, a generalizing character, most widely covering all the main aspects of combat life and the activities of the Russian army during the First World War (1914-1918). It provides detailed and yet compact information about the organization, development, combat and technical support, equipment, armament and technical equipment of the armed forces of the Russian Empire during the First World War. Due to the completeness and comprehensiveness of the problem, the author managed to create a volumetric picture, well-developed in all details and giving the most visual representation of all aspects of military organization and military life. Introduction The First World War is one of the most significant events of the twentieth century. As a result, not only the map of Europe and the whole world was radically redrawn, but all the further history of the 20th century was actually predetermined. The consequences of the First World War affected even the fate of those states of the world who did not take direct part in it. The war and the events connected with it not only changed the borders of states, but also shook the foundations of the way of life, the social and political order of many countries of the world, caused profound changes in culture, science, technology and even public morality. It was not in vain that contemporaries called the First World War the Great War, and this name can be found in the literature to this day. The First World War was an event, extremely important for our country, in fact a turning point. However, in the future, it was pushed into the shadows by other, equally important events. And if in the 1920-1930's in the USSR there was still published some notable number of books devoted to the Great War (they mostly dealt with military issues), then after 1945 this topic completely lost its relevance, becoming a distant and in many ways alien history - in the eyes of contemporaries, the Second World War Much more important. In addition, the gap in state succession also affected. About the First World War they continued to remember only in the circles of Russian emigration, where there were still many direct participants in the battles of 1914-1917. Emigrant authors made a very great contribution to the national historiography of the Great War, but they worked in conditions of limited source study base, and in particular, with almost complete inaccessibility of archival materials. It is not surprising that in the emigre literature there is mainly a memoir genre. At the same time, it was the authors who worked in emigration that were the first to begin to cover the topic of the uniform of the Russian army during the Great War. Interest to the First World War began to wake up in Russia only after 1991. Since then, a large number of books and articles on this subject have been published, including those where the organization, uniform, equipment and armament of the Russian army in 1914-1918 are more or less detailed. From time to time, books were published devoted to individual arms, weapons or military equipment (eg Baryatinsky M., Kolomiets M. Armored cars of the Russian army 1906-1917, M., 2000; Kaninsky G., Kirilets S. Automobiles of the Russian Imperial Army M., 2010; and others). However, the topic of Russia's participation in the First World War still seems to be in many aspects of its own little-known, and, in a broader sense, completely inexhaustible. In addition, there is a clear shortage of works of a generalizing nature, most widely covering all or almost all aspects of the combat life and activities of the Russian army in this period. The book is an attempt to create, if possible, a more complete reference book about the Russian army during the period of the First World War. The book is devoted to the organization, uniform, equipment and armament of the Russian army and covers the period from February to March 1917, inclusive. The republican period (February-October 1917) and the period after the October 1917 are not considered, although in some cases the time frame can be expanded if necessary. The subject of consideration is only the land forces of Russia, and only those units that took part in the fighting (the current army) - their organization, staff armament, combat support, uniforms, equipment. Combat operations and the course of hostilities are not considered. The author does not set himself the goal of detailing peacetime uniforms (including parade), focusing solely on field equipment and their evolution during the war. At the same time, information on units and subunits not taking direct part in hostilities (Amu-Darya Flotilla, Odessa Naval Battalion, etc.) and military schools (cadet corps, military schools and schools) is not included in the book. Not considered are also various experimental types of weapons, military equipment and so on. The first copies of the book were sent to the State Museums, as well as to the library of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.
