This is a high-quality replica of the Close Combat Clasp in Silver, crafted from brass and silver-plated. Designed to look just as it would have upon presentation, it will naturally develop a patina over time, giving it an authentic, aged appearance.
Historical Context:
The Close Combat Clasp was established on November 5, 1942 (a version for the Luftwaffe was introduced on November 3, 1944) to recognize soldiers of the ground forces for participation in close-quarters combat. Special regulations existed for those serving on the Eastern Front (from June 22, 1941) or the African theater (from March 26, 1943):
•8–12 months of service equaled 5 combat days,
•12–15 months equaled 10 combat days,
•15+ months equaled 15 combat days.
To be eligible for this award, recipients were required to have already earned the General Assault Badge. The award could be bestowed by commanders at the company, battalion, or regimental level.
Award Classes (Stufe):
•Bronze (3rd Class): For 15 combat days (10 for severely wounded).
•Silver (2nd Class): For 30 combat days (20 for severely wounded).
•Gold (1st Class): For 50 combat days (40 for severely wounded).
On March 26, 1944, Adolf Hitler declared the Golden Clasp the “highest honor of the infantry.” Starting August 30, 1944, recipients of the Gold Clasp were automatically awarded the Gold German Cross and a 21-day leave. Only 403 individuals received the 1st Class Gold Clasp.
Design:
•The clasp featured a spray of oak leaves with a central shield displaying a swastika and crossed bayonet and grenade, crowned by the Imperial Eagle with outstretched wings.
•Made initially from bronze and later from zinc, the clasp was worn on the left side of the tunic, 1 cm above the breast pocket.
•Recipients upgraded to a higher class would replace the previous badge, which remained in their possession.
